Why a StreamEmber game mod won't start

When a StreamEmber mod doesn't start, the usual causes are the wrong game edition (GTA 5 Enhanced instead of Legacy), a game update that broke Script Hook, the wrong game folder, starting online instead of story mode, or antivirus removing mod files. The steps below cover GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Minecraft.

How to fix a mod that won't start

    Start the mod from the launcher

    Open Games, pick the game and click Play. The launcher checks requirements, finds the game folder and downloads Script Hook and the StreamEmber Runtime for you. If it fails, click Show details to see which step stopped.

    GTA 5: use the Legacy edition

    StreamEmber mods need GTA V Legacy (GTA5.exe). GTA V Enhanced (GTA5_Enhanced.exe) is not supported: the mod stays inactive there. Install and start the Legacy edition.

    Choose the right game folder

    If the launcher can't find the game, it asks you to Choose the GTA V installation (or the RDR2 one). Click Choose folder and pick the folder that contains the game's .exe file. Your choice is remembered.

    After a game update

    When Rockstar updates GTA 5 or RDR2, Script Hook stops working until a version for the new game build is released. Wait for it, then click Play again so the launcher re-checks and refreshes the files.

    Load story mode only

    GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 mods work in story mode only. Don't open GTA Online or Red Dead Online with mods; it risks a ban.

    Check your antivirus

    Some antivirus tools quarantine .asi or dinput8.dll files. Add an exception for the game folder and the launcher, then click Play again; the launcher verifies the files and restores missing ones.

    Minecraft: let the launcher install it

    For Minecraft you don't install anything yourself: the launcher downloads Java, the Minecraft Java Edition client, Fabric Loader and our mods. On a slower PC, turn on Performance mode.

Does StreamEmber work with GTA 5 Enhanced?

No. Our GTA 5 mods run on GTA V Legacy (GTA5.exe) only. On the Enhanced edition the mod stays inactive.

Can I use the mods in GTA Online or Red Dead Online?

No. GTA 5 and RDR2 mods are for story mode only. Using mods online can get your Rockstar account banned.

Do I need to install Minecraft or Fabric myself?

No. The launcher downloads Java, the Minecraft Java Edition client, Fabric Loader and the mods it needs, and keeps them up to date.
